The novel, shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2022, vividly describes a Caribbean less familiar to tourists but with conflicts and choices familiar to most.

You’ll be ‘sucking your teeth’ and ‘cutting your eye’ along with Alethea while you despair of her choices and cheer at her strength. Written in a mix of Trinidadian creole and formal English, this story will reverberate within your soul for a while.

The author narrates the audio book, so well worth getting.
